"Ana Flores: The Island Draws Me," featuring figurative sculptures, paintings on paper, and text installed in a domestic setting

76 Bellevue Ave, Newport, RI   (view map)

Ana Flores’s new exhibit, “The Island Draws Me,” has a serious agenda: it examines the history of Spanish colonization, sugar, and the Cuban revolution, laced with her family history. The artist explains: “My family’s heirlooms and mementos were all swept away by the Cuban revolution. I began to fill this void by creating sculptures that suggested layers of my lost history. My creative process begins by searching for fragments of artifacts that suggest stories . . . In the process of creating the sculptures, memories are excavated and I cobble these together to form narratives that put my personal history in context.” “The Island Draws Me” includes sculptures, paintings on paper, and text installed in a domestic setting. It’s at the Newport Art Museum, 76 Bellevue Ave, through January 6 | 401.848.8200 | newportart museum.org
