"Let Go: Moment in Movement," photographs by James Starkman
Curtis Mayfield wrote the theme song for parkour artists: “I Gotta Keep On Moving.“ Parkour — aka l’art du dé placement or freerunning — originated in France; “it involved training to overcome any obstacle within one’s path by adapting one’s movements to the environment. Simply put, Parkour is getting from point A to B in the shortest amount of time possible.” That’s how the folks at Yellow Peril Gallery, 60 Valley St #5, Providence, summarize the essence of Parkour; they’re hosting “Let Go: Moment in Movement,” an exhibit by photographer James Starkman. He says: “What first caught my attention was the aerodynamic, dance-like quality of Parkour, but what really intrigued me was a fearlessness in their faces. I tried to capture the metaphoric possibilities of their kinetic movement, and felt I was experiencing private moments with them.” Yellow Peril says: “As the traceurs bound over walls and dive down staircases, they begin to redefine their relationship to their environment . . . Obstacles become opportunities, fear becomes surrender, and confinement becomes freedom — not only for the traceurs, but for the viewer entering the action.” “Let Go” is on display through September 9; Bullettrun, the Parkour artists in Starkman’s photos, will perform at tonight’s opening reception (5-9 pm) | 401.861.1535 | yellowperilgallery.com
