RI PrideFest & 36th Anniversary Celebration

South Water St, Providence, RI   (view map)

There’s something wonderful about watching people stand up for themselves. There’s something wonderful about assisting with their forward motion, too. The annual gatherings of GLBT communities around the country resound with strength, and our own PrideFest is no exception. It takes guts to stroll the streets proclaiming the particulars of your identity, especially if you’re part of a historically abused minority. So hats off to the organizers and participants of the event, which is both party and parade (the party has more than a bit of parading too). The entertainment and music starts at noon along the river on South Water Street in downtown Providence; the headliner is Frenchie Davis, of The Voice/American Idol fame. The Illuminated Night-Time Parade begins at 8:30 pm at Dorrance and Fountain streets (get your costumes ready). Other Pride events of note: “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” Bingo at the Riviera Bingo Palace (1612 Elmwood Avenue, Cranston) on the 14th; and, on the 17th, the RI Pride Hangover Drag Brunch at Murphy’s Bar and Grill (100 Fountain St, Providence), with seatings at 11 am and 1:30 pm; and the Official Closing Party — with a mechanical bull! and silly string! — at the Colosseum (180 Pine St, Providence).
