From tea tasting to jujitsu workshops to samurai sessions to bigwig galas, the arrival of the Black Ships Festival brings lots of cultural edification to the foreground. The eloquent boom of the taiko drums alone are worth absorbing, but there are loads of other events to be intrigued by. Some history: “The Black Ships Festival commemorates the historic achievements of Commodore Matthew C. Perry, USN, of Newport. The ‘Black Ships,’ or ‘Kurofune,’ refers to the Japanese term for foreign ships which . . . were excluded from Japan for 200 years until 1854. Commodore Perry negotiated the Treaty of Kanagawa in 1854, the first treaty between the United States and Japan, thus ending two centuries of Japanese isolationism.” The 29th annual fest runs through the 22nd; you’ll want to scroll the itinerary at newportevents.com/blackships | 401.846.2720
