Festival Ballet Providence presents UP CLOSE ON HOPE
At Festival Ballet’s “Up Close On Hope” dance series, the first two words are vital. The intimate performance space has 90 seats, so the proximity to the dancers is as up close as it can be. The ninth season offers four world premieres (by Viktor Plotnikov, Mark Harootian, Leticia Guerrero, and George Birkadze), a pair of classical works (by Marius Petipa and Agrippina Vaganova), all set to a wide array of music, including Les Tambours Du Bronx, Lady Gaga, Vangelis, and Shostakovich. The longest piece, the FB premiere of Plotnikov’s Short Stories For a Small Magazine, was inspired by Jean-Paul Belmondo’s 1973 film Le Magnifique and “consists of six stories exploring family, hardship during war, bad habits, labor, machines, childhood and love, each one the visualization of a writer’s imagination.” That’s a lot of ground to cover in 25 minutes! Shows are on Friday at 8 pm and Saturday at 7:30 pm through March 3 at the Black Box Theater, 825 Hope Street, Providence | $50, includes wine and light snacks at intermission | 401.353.1129 | festivalballet.com
