Festen, by David Eldridge, based on the film Dogme and screenplay by Thomas Vinterberg
Family gatherings can be full of light. Family gatherings can also reveal darkness. When the clan in Festen unites to celebrate the patriarch’s 60th birthday, there’s a pall on the proceedings; a daughter has recently committed suicide. But when the party continues, an even grimmer subject emerges: the honoree is accused of molesting his kids. David Eldridge’s script stems from Thomas Vinterberg’s play (which was made into the film The Celebration). With Tony Estrella directing, the troupe at the Gamm Theatre, 172 Exchange Place, Pawtucket, will bring the drama to life. They believe Festen “redefines tragedy for the modern age.” Shows run through February 12 | $34 | 401.723.4266 | gammtheatre.org
