Rebirth Brass Band + the Extraordinary Rendition Band + Fungus Amungus
Whenever I’m feeling dreary, I conjure my very vivid memories of the Rebirth Brass Band kicking the hell out of the Glass House in the late ’80s. The New Orleans outfit was an upstart crew back then, and their vigor was being touted by all those who dug second line party music. These days, they’re a veteran ensemble revered by anyone with a good set of ears. The informality of their groove, the joy of their polyphony, the profound chemistry of their teamwork — it often adds up to greatness. When you catch them in a joint as cozy as the Spot Underground, 15 Elbow Street, Providence, it’s sure to be an overwhelming event. There’s a punchy fanfare on “I Like It Like That” from their new Rebirth Of New Orleans (Basin Street) that has already generated goose pimples at my house. Imagine what it will sound like when they blast it right in front of you. Extraordinary Rendition Band and Fungus Amungus get things going at 9 pm
