BEST MUSIC POLL > PROVIDENCE

Best DJ/Electronica Act in Providence

DJ Tek

We can't deny his loyal legion of devotees, who came out strong — ridiculously strong — as Tek walked away with more votes than every other category victor. Damn. The self-anointed "Beat Prophet" inherited a music studio from his grandfather when he was nine years old and started spinning for crowds at age 14 before hitting the airwaves on WBRU and BSR Radio. The JWU alum continues to dabble in all forms of rap-infused media from his Providence lab, whipping up syndicated mix show “Streethop Mixshow,” developing rap site StreetHop.com, cranking out his Don't Sweat the Teknique mixtape series, and occasionally spinning live with an array of equipment (including wax and CD turntables, effects processors, and beat machines). Tek has opened for everyone from B2K to Cam'Ron, and shared the stage with industry legends LL Cool J, Nas, and the late Guru.
