Back in the early days at the Knick, they would tear the joint apart with swinging stuff like "Honey Hush." Forty-three years later, they regularly do similar deconstruction at venue after venue. Sure, punch has something to do with it, but we're thinking that Roomful snatched up the Best Blues/R&B Act category because of their consistency. Need a blast of uplift in your life? A wall of brass and reeds, an explosive rhythm section, a passionate singer, and a burning guitarist applying themselves to a book of grooving nuggets is a good recipe for a cure-all. They didn't name their most recent disc Raisin' a Ruckus for nothing, you know. Our beloved little big band is a versatile bunch, too. A jazz tune here, some N'awlins stomp there — maybe a tad of down-home soul if it's a full moon. No wonder they're always leaving their audience exhausted on the dance floor. From "Hot Little Mama" to "Big Mamou," exclamation is Roomful's stock in trade.
