Slideshow: Contemporary animation in Providence

Waltz with Bashir art director speaks, plus Festival of Contemporary Animation

There are moments when, by coincidence or an aligning of the stars, something amazing accidentally comes together. Next week in Providence is one of those times, as two unrelated but complimentary events combine to create one of the finest showcases of contemporary animation that you’ll probably find anywhere in North America this year. And it’s all free.

David Polonsky, art director of the animated documentary Waltz with Bashir, gives a talk about the making of the film at the RISD Auditorium, 17 Canal St., at 6:30 p.m. April 13. By chance, Rhode Island College then rounds up notable international and local cartoons for its Festival of Contemporary Animation on April 17 and 18 at Sapinsley Hall, 600 Mount Pleasant Ave.

The human condition
In the ambitious program they will perform this weekend (November 20 and 21 at Rhode Island College), members of Fusionworks Dance Company will premiere three pieces that look at the human condition from several perspectives.
Open to interpretation
For decades, abstraction dominated avant-garde discourse, as painters worked to break art down to its basic elements, stripping away more and more of what seemed necessary to a painting, and then stripping away even more.

Airing it out
New York painter Eve Aschheim has said that she uses geometry in her abstractions "to 'think about' the intersection of nature and cityscape. My works might suggest the chaotic geometry of the city, the expectant stillness of air, the tenuous balance of a wire line against a building."
Beauty for beauty's sake
For several years, Cristin Searles of Providence has been stitching together soft sculptures that catchily evoke natural forms.
Moving Off the Plantation?
Rhode Island, whatever its obsession with history, has only lately begun to come to terms with the darkest stain on its past: slavery.

It is against AS220's religion to leave any space empty that can be filled with art. So the lobby is the AS220 Resident Gallery, which occupants of the building take turns filling with their stuff.
