A hub of artistic activity in Boston, the BCA offers exhibitions, performances, concerts, and poetry readings. Subsidized work spaces are also available in the form of studios, rehearsal space, and theaters. The Cyclorama, built in 1884 (to display a wrap-around mural of the Battle of Gettysburg), is used for exhibitions, performances, and community events. Brickbottom was named after an area of Somerville rich in clay deposits used for making bricks, and it is one of the only nonprofit art galleries in the area. The building includes 150 condominiums for artists to live and work in, along with a free-of-cost gallery. Its “Open Studios” event held the weekend before Thanksgiving, is one of the oldest in Boston, with more than 100 artists inviting the public in to see how and where they work. The Gallery also publishes an online newsletter, The Baguette.
